Vitamin D and disease severity in coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19)

The role of 25-OH-vitamin D in the assessment coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has not been investigated. We sought to investigate prevalence deficiency among COVID-19 patients, and determine associations between status severity disease. have conducted a retrospective observational study patients admitted University Verona Hospital Trust. Demographic, clinical biochemical parameters were collected at hospital admission, serum levels measured. following outcomes assessed: arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2); C-reactive protein (CRP); length hospitalization; requirement therapy; non-invasive ventilation (NIV); mechanical ventilation; death. Among 61 enrolled, 72.1% was deficient (<20 ng/mL) 57.4% had 25-OHvitamin <15 ng/mL. Patients with PaO2 <60 mmHg significantly lower mean compared ?60 (13.3 ng/mL vs 20.4 respectively, p=0.03). Vitamin associated 3-fold higher risk having pO2 mmHg. increased CRP dyspnea. more severe systemic inflammatory response respiratory failure patients.
